Veins

Unforgiveably, perhaps, I have decided that I would be a superb drug addict. I am fascinated by the path that substances take through my bloodstream, and the effects of them entering my nervous system, my brain, my mind.

How did this happen? When was I consumed by these responses? I can sense, deeply sense, the unbreakable chain of chemical reactions spreading, shuddering, ebbing through me.

All this because of drinking a cup of coffee after four and a half days starved of caffeine.

If you have a good reason to get off the caffeine, you need to stick cold turkey for about a week before it feels any better. The withdrawal symptoms are not to be underestimated; some people are fine, maybe slightly lethargic, whereas some have migraine level headaches, shivers and all sorts from a fairly low intake.

A far better method is to come off gradually. This is less successful with nicotine or alcohol, but with caffeine it is fairly easy to reduce by, say half a cup of coffee or tea every day and not feel it. So it takes twice as many days as you drink cups of coffee and then you’re free.

If you do not have a good reason to do it, enjoy your coffee.

Welcome back to the blogosphere. :-)

Coffee and self-flagellation. All good for the blogging soul.
