As you get older, be aware that the ‘lending money’ threshold rises. When you’re a kid, you can justifiably ask to be paid back if you someone borrows a quid. When you’re in your late teens, that sum rises to £2.50. Early 20s = a fiver. Once you turn 30, if you chase someone to repay the tenner you lent them, you look mean-spirited and churlish. So remain silent instead, and nurse a nagging resentment about being taken for granted. Oh, and make sure you don’t buy the borrower a drink for the next six months.
